Rex Asks: Can Insulation be Added on Top of Insulation?

 Before adding insulation to your existing attic insulation, ask these questions:

• Is the insulation badly compressed, uneven, or concealing a problem?
• Has it been contaminated by rodents, mold, smoke, or other material?
• Are there roof leaks or moisture problems?
• Is the attic floor properly air-sealed?
• Are soffit vents and ventilation chutes protected?
• Are bathroom fans vented outdoors?

Your answers will determine if clean, dry, effective insulation can added over the top of the existing insulation or if the insulation should be removed, proper air sealing done, and new insulation installed.
