Houses lose heat through their sidewalls. Measured in square footage, sidewalls represent the largest exposure of any area to the outdoors. So it makes sense to make them as resistant to heat flow as possible. While new homes certainly benefit from proper insulation systems installed during the building process, many older homes, built before sidewall insulation had been invented or perfected, are candidates for insulation upgrade.

Several materials are available for sidewall insulation, including cellulose, fiberglass, and foam. Each retards heat flow and cuts down on air infiltration through gaps in the sheathing and other areas. Some foam products can be injected into sidewall cavities, even with insulation already installed, thereby creating a more comfortable house and decreasing fuel costs.
