The term "commercial building" refers to many different types of structures, including light and heavy commercial buildings, churches, schools, condominiums, and others. These buildings need effective insulation systems for the same reasons as an individual home: to reduce air leakage, minimize heating and cooling costs, reflect radiant heat, eliminate condensation, and - an increasing more important consideration - noise reduction.

The most frequently used materials in the construction of commercial buildings are concrete (e.g., slabs), metal (e.g., building roofs), and steel (e.g., walls). All of these have insulation requirements that need to be considered during the building's planning phases.
